Taking on Texas

One of our favorite restaurants  is Texas Roadhouse!  We love the service, the steak, the random line dancing…what’s not to love?  The problem is we live in a teeny tiny town and we have no Texas Roadhouse…although the local joke is that one is coming, that rumor circulates every few months or so.

When my husband won trucker of the quarter for Texas Roadhouse everyone joked they should send us some of their delicious rolls and butter, but he did get a hoodie.

So that got me craving some of those rolls and butter…and I had seen many copy cats of them on my Pinterest, so I decided what the hey!  I’ll try it!

First of all I had to use yeast…which I’ve never used in my life…my husband pokes fun of me for all of my step by step photos when I’m blogging, but I really could have used some when I was waiting for the yeast to “bloom”.

Secondly, the first time many years ago when I tried to make Miss Kays biscuits from scratch it was a nightmare…like it scarred me from rolling any kind of “sticky” dough…however I am a little more confident in my skills now so this wasn’t the disaster it totally could have been.

Texas Roadhouse Rolls & Butter

Ingredients

1 pack of yeast

3/4 cup honey

4 cups of flour

1 egg

1 1/4 cup milk

1 tsp salt

1 1/2 stick of butter

1 tsp cinnamon

1/2 cup powdered sugar

Scald milk by boiling it and then allow it to come back to room temperature.  Yes, this does make your kitchen kind of smell bad.

Add yeast, honey, and milk to a bowl and mix.  Allow it to set for five minutes or more, allowing yeast to bloom.

I did this in my stand mixer bowl because you’re going to have to use it anyway, may as well save some dishes

Next add 3 tbs melted butter, 2 cups of flour, and the egg to the yeast mixture

Use the bread hook attachment and let knead the bread while slowly adding flour until the dough comes together

Add the salt and let the mixer knead the bread for another 8-10 minutes

Take a medium bowl and spray with non-stick spray

Transfer dough to this bowl and allow the dough to rise, covered,  in a warm place for about an hour.  You want it to double.

I turned my oven onto 400, covered it with a damp towel, and left it sitting on top of the stove, about an hour and a half

Flour up wherever you are going to be rolling this, and make sure to sprinkle some flour on top.  Be patient, be gentle, do not try and man handle this dough.

I am still no expert at rolling out dough guys…you should see how crazy my pie crusts look.

Roll this out to about 1/2 inch thick all around, in a rectangular shape.  Mine’s very close to a rectangle.

Fold the dough in half!

Cut out the rolls, you can make them as big or as little as you want!

They’re kind of uniform….

Put onto a greased baking pan and into a 350 degree oven for 11-14 minutes.  Be on alert not to burn the bottoms…(like I did with some)

To make the butter

Put one stick of room temperature butter into the mixer with the cinnamon and powdered sugar, whip it until mixed well!

When the rolls come out of the oven brush some melted butter on the top,and you’re done!

  1. The closest Texas Road House is an hour away from us so we don’t get to go very often. Their rolls are delicious and now everyone can make them at home.

  2. LOVE Texas Roadhouse. We go there almost every time we visit my mom since there is one just a few miles away. Unfortunately, I can’t have the bread any more because of the gluten. But on the bright side, I now have a recipe that I can work on converting to gluten free!
